Helia Sehat is a Persian-Canadian multidisciplinary artist and an environmental psychology researcher. Both her artistic and scientific research practices center on the relationship between People, Place, and the Planet.
Helia’s work explores the subjective sense of connection to the people we meet, the places we visit, and the planet we inhabit. Her artistic efforts complement the empirical approach to her academic research, through which she examines people’s psychological experiences and responses to the environment and the ongoing ecological crisis.
Helia’s art practice takes on a process-oriented approach and uses various mediums including drawing, painting, photography, film, and text. She derives her inspiration from her travels, the insights arising from mindful experiences, and time spent in nature. Her work prioritizes simple compositions that can evoke a sense of connection and spiritual mystery. Feminine, natural and mystical forms are abundant in her work.
Helia’s training in fine arts began early in life through private and group-based practice in Tehran, Iran, and later at the Toronto School of Art, New York School of Art, and the Arts Student League of New York. She has been featured in multiple art shows in Toronto and New York City. Her research work is affiliated with the University of Victoria, Canada. She is currently based in New York City.
